"...And the Flute Players are Always Cute..."

That is a quote from Elder Oaks my friends. Best day of my life.
But before I get ahead of myself, this week was SO GOOD! Super busy. So, like I said last week, we had MLC on Monday and Preparation Day was Tuesday instead. We played Volleyball with the rest of the Sister Training Leaders and Zone leaders on the east side of the mission. It was the best. Then Lily took us to Panda Express. She's my favorite. She's taking us to Coldstone tonight. I am so spoiled here. Tuesday was also Sister Hokafonu's "One month left mark". We didn't realize it until Lily said something. She almost started crying lol. She'll be okay. I'm trying to convince her to move to Utah ;) HAHA, Oh, and at the end of the night we got the classiest pick up line from this guy at the gas station. He looked at us with a joint in his hand and said, "You want some weed, cuties?" Gross! We gave him a Mormon.org card (seriously, this is what I'll be doing in college) and he started preaching to us about how people need to live their religion more often and how he's Christian and loves Jesus. Oh boy. It was hilarious. Don't do drugs people. It won't help you look good, I promise.
On Wednesday we got to go on exchanges with the BYSA sisters. I stayed here with Sister Rapier! She is seriously so full of love for everyone around her. It was much needed for me to learn from her this week! She's been a sister that many have had a hard time with, but, I don't know what it is, but God gives me a lot of charity for those people and we got along great! It was a fantastic exchange and super helpful! And we found out that we sang a lot of the same songs in our high school choirs lol.
Unfortunately our Recent Convert Teresa was in the hospital this week. She's been overworking herself, but luckily she's home now and getting better. We were able to visit her a couple times and I'm forever grateful for that. I've missed her like crazy and she's really needed a little break from work. It was really good to see her.
Sister Hokafonu got her permanent crowns in, so now she has two white front teeth instead of gold teeth! It's really different, but she really likes it :) Change and repentance is sometimes evident in your appearance!
We got to visit with our investigator Latear last week! She and Tearra came to church for the second time on Sunday! They're both progressing really well!  Church on Sunday was a special stake conference with Elder Robbins and Elder Calderwood. They LOVED it! Our stake President challenged the stake to read the Book of Mormon and finish it by the end of the year and Latear called us today and said that she's doing it! SO MUCH PROGRESS! And her progress is getting faster and faster. She told us last week that she was super excited to be baptized! We're hoping to put her on date for October 8th right before Sister Hokafonu leaves! Praying for it!
We did get a new investigator this week! Her name is Monica. She was a member referral from the Jones Falls ward right next to us. She has a slight mental disability that we're not quite sure of, and we can tell she used to be addicted to drugs, but her understanding is all there. She read the introduction to the Book of Mormon out loud for us and then told us what that all meant to her and how she loves that it's a record of the ancestors of the Native Americans because she's part Native American! She accepted a soft baptismal invite (meaning, "when you come to know these things are true, will you get baptized by proper authority?") and it went really well! We took Elder Gays suggestion to focus on from last week and invited her to say the closing prayer at the beginning of the lesson before I said the opening prayer. She said yes, opened up about how she didn't know how to pray, and we got to teach her! She said the most fantastic first prayer and LOVED it! I love the instruction we receive from our leaders. It really truly helps!
Speaking of instruction:
The meeting with Elder Oaks was FANTASTIC! We shook his hand as well as the other leaders present. It was really funny, he basically told our entire mission that he didn't think he needed to talk about being obedient with us, which is what he usually has to talk about with missionaries, but he could tell we were (for the most part) a consecrated mission :). So, instead he decided to talk all about how our missions were just preparing us for marriage and raising a family. Ha-ha, all the Elders said it made them super trunky lol. All of the speakers, Elder Robbins (one of the 7 Presidents of the 70) and Elder Calderwood (one of our Area 70), as well as President and Sister Christiansen all related it back to marriage. Yup. Gross. And I did get to perform the musical number! I played the flute in the background of Sister Stolworthy and Sister Olsen singing "Be Still, My Soul". The flute part is very independent of the song, so it was difficult, but angels definitely helped me. It was the best I'd ever played that song. But Elder Oaks LOVED the musical number. He stood up from his seat and turned around and watched me as I played. I was a flippin' nervous wreck. Playing for an Apostle! But I just pretended like he wasn't watching me ha-ha. Then when I sat down he complimented all of us and went on to tell us that he played the Obo in school. He loved playing the Obo because he got to sit next to the flute players. He loved that because he said flute players are always cute hahaha. I was super red because he was looking at me the entire time he was telling that story and the entire mission was laughing so hard after he said that! A few missionaries came up to me after and said, “What does it feel like to be hit on by an Apostle??" Lol! So embarrassing! But it was really good! Elder Oaks is HILARIOUS! He was cracking jokes the entire time ;) It was truly an inspiring meeting :) And I got a selfie with President Christiansen afterwards, so that was basically the best thing ever. Oh, and I got some Sheetz peanut butter hot chocolate for the first time this year because there's no Sheetz around me. It was the best day of my life :)
Some other things Elder Oaks talked with us about was revelation. Which was super good! He told us one way to determine whether something was just our own thoughts or whisperings of the Spirit was whether or not we wanted to do it. If we didn't want to do it in the first place it was probably the Spirit. That was SUPER nice for me to hear because I've been praying for continual confirmations that I made the right decision to go home in November. I know it was right, but I want to make sure that doesn't change before I go home ha-ha. And when he said that it was another confirmation that I received that it was the right decision, especially because it was something I didn't want to do. So there's that. We were also told multiple times to teach repentance and baptize converts, which has been something our entire mission is working on. We were reminded that "repentance isn't the backup plan to the Plan of Salvation. It IS the Plan." SO good :) We were also told that we were enrolled in the University of the Lord and taking some pretty difficult classes. It was a really good analogy to missionary work and our future lives.
To end the week, we got to do service at Bishop's and have yummy Brazilian bbq :) Sis. Hokafonu hadn't had that yet, and it was DELICIOIUS! I love Brazilian food! SO good! I have a food baby now. I won't have to eat for the rest of the week lol. It was such a good, revelatory week. I have loved all I've learned and felt this week! My mission is seriously the best and I am serving in the best mission in the world for me. I couldn't have asked for a better one, and I'm forever grateful for this privilege to serve :)
I want to leave you with a quote I read today that rings true to almost everything I've felt this week:
"I've long believed that the closer we come to Christ, the more aware we are of what we yet lack in becoming like Him. At the same time, the closer we are, the more we can allow Him to help us become more perfect - more whole and complete, healed and pure. We become more able to have tears for His sorrows and pain at His grief-and to feel what causes Him sorrow and grief. We have more meekness in suffering and more praise for relief. We are increasingly aware of what He notices, what He feels, what He would have us do." -Mary Ellen Edmunds
This work is real. We're here to become like Him. And the way to Him is through His restored Gospel. The gospel of Jesus Christ.

Pictures..... So, a baby was "thrown" into my arms again. I swear I don't try to hold babies. Then Sis. Hokafonu HAD to take a picture. Enjoy the other random pictures of us with Sister Pratt, sunsets, me driving... Our healthy food... And selfies.

Charity and Patience‏

This week has taken a lot of charity and patience. It's funny because just last week I was thinking about where I was when I started my mission and how cold my heart was lol. I didn't like anyone and it was really hard for me to have charity. So, as I was reflecting, I was thinking about the great blessing it has been to have been given some charity for the people I serve. And patience. Just as I thought I had gotten so much better and that God had given me the charity I was asking for, and I thought I was doing good, God humbled me, because that's just what He does to those He loves. Over and over and over again this week I was humbled and reminded by how much further I still have to go. Thank goodness progress doesn't end when a mission does. Now, don't get me wrong, I love people much more than I did when I started my mission, but there's so much more. It was hard not to get down on myself, because it always seems like there's so much more I could be doing. So much more I could be sharing with people and so much more I could be loving people. I just want everyone to know that you never "arrive" on a mission, or in life. I never thought I would, but I was just reminded that I really won't ha-ha. But it's good, because just like Ether 12:27 says, God gives us weaknesses so He can make us stronger. And for that, I'm grateful.
So, I'm emailing today because yesterday I got to go to MLC with Elder Gay! He had a family member pass away last week so his schedule changed, but he's doing well. Many prayers have been said on his behalf. MLC was amazing! It's funny because one of the main topics Elder Gay talked about was how we need to have charity for those in our stewardship. If we want to give correction and help them grow, they have to know we love them, which is a no brainer, but a good reminder.
My week last week went a little something like this:
Dinner with a super pregnant member who's having her baby today! Exchanges with the Ellicott City sisters! If you remember, about 6 months ago I went on an exchange with Sister Udall for her first exchange; well, now she's here and I exchanged with her and took her to Baltimore! Literally no one answered their door until it was time for dinner and we said to each other, "let's just try one more," and an amazing member answered the door, offered us water (it was flippin' hot outside!) and was so very grateful for our visit. Apparently she hasn't had missionaries over in about a year! And she even referred us to her sister Felicia! Sweet! Then we had a great lesson with the Jones family! They are truly progressing little by little. We've had a couple lessons with them this week and baptism is brought up each time and they are currently praying about a date in October!! WOOT WOOT! We also taught Tearra about the Gospel of Jesus Christ in 2 Nephi 31; we had another amazing dinner with my favorite Wood family :) And Tykira, one of our investigators, came to church Volleyball Thursday with her friend Happiness, so we got to go and watch! :) Like I said, step by step we are seeing progression.
We also contacted a few headquarter referrals (self-referrals) this week. One of them, Raquel, was questioning everything we believed and then said, "we'll have lunch sometime. I want to talk more." YES! AND, Ally, another HQ referral was actually referred by a member in Arkansas and Ally went to church lots of times as a teenager (you youth, listen up! You make a difference!); we got to talk to Ally on the phone and she kept saying how she just kept feeling drawn to this church and she currently has a fiancĂ© and a little baby, and she wants to raise her family in a good church that will help them! SO, they reached out to us to come and teach her entire family a little bit more so they can join the church! WOOT WOOT! I LOVE FAMILIES! PRAYERS WORK! And it's really cool because this entire experience she's having all started with her friend who invited her to church when she was a teenager!
On Saturday (my 15 month mark!) we had our zone conference with Elder Gay all about how we can help our investigators progress, which is exactly what I needed! We're teaching so many people, but most of them aren't yet progressing, which is a struggle our entire mission is having. So that was an extremely spiritual experience, as was MLC yesterday. Elder Gay truly teaches with the power and authority from God.
Unfortunately we weren't able to go to another meeting with him and our Recent Converts because they were busy, which made us a little depressed, but it was for the best and God knew what He was doing because we were able to pick up a new investigator we street contacted named Khapre (pronounced Capri, like the juice). She's 18 and wants to come back to a church; she said she'd been thinking about it for a while now, but didn't know where to start! Ta da! That's why there's missionaries :) We introduced her to the Book of Mormon and we'll be coming back tonight :) And that was my week.
Thank you all again for all your love and support. I truly feel that strength every single week. Missionary work would be much harder without you. Love you all!
Shout-out to Kaitlyn, Wyatt, and Whitney for all having birthdays this week and last :) Happy Birthday!

Another Solid Week in the Celestial Peake!‏

By the time Tuesday comes, I can't even remember what I did the week before. It's a good thing I write in my journal, but it's still a challenge. Oh, and in case you didn't realize, yesterday was a holiday, so the libraries weren't open. So that's why I'm emailing today! Hope you had a good holiday!
This week started out pretty slow, but it's picking up! We found four new investigators this week! On Tuesday, the Hubeners, a cute old couple in the ward, fed us a true Eastern style breakfast including the crab cakes. Yup. And Sister Hokafonu sat in the infamous "Chair" that only the missionaries who are getting married within the year sit in ha-ha. I'm glad I didn't sit in that chair. Sister Hokafonu started "My Plan" this week, which is a program put on by the church to prepare missionaries to go home in the last 6 weeks of their mission. Ha-ha, she cried. It's okay, I cried while watching the 12 Steps to Recovery videos, so we're even. It's funny because right now I get to see her reaction to all of this, as well as remember Sister Bindrup's reactions, and prepare myself for next transfer.
We tried by one of our investigators later that day and she didn't answer, but this 27 year old guy (her neighbor) stopped us and said, "You can come in for lunch. Stay a while." And both Sister Hokafonu and I didn't register that he was hitting on us for a good minute, so we just stood there confused. Ha-ha, it was hilarious. We said no thanks and gave him a Mormon.org card instead. Ha-ha, that's going to be my getaway answer when guys ask me out one day, "I can't, but have a picture of Jesus." Lol. My life.
We did get to try by a referral from the Elders from a while back named Crystal! She was home and so was her roommate Rachel, as well as Rachel's daughter Ziara! We started talking about the Bible and the Book of Mormon and had an amazing conversation about the stories in there! All three of them said they were interested in us coming back and in coming to church! So, we picked up all three of them as new investigators and plan to meet with them later this week :)
Sandra, our Recent Convert, is currently reading in Helaman already! (She was just in 2 Nephi 3 weeks ago...)! She's working on her family history and as soon as the temple reopens in October, we'll be going with her to do some BAPTISMS! Sooo great :) I've never had the opportunity to go and do baptisms with my investigators because I always get transferred out right before their baptism, so this will be so amazing! Same with Teresa! I can't wait!
I got to pet lots of kitties on Wednesday, so it was a great day. Yes, I have pictures. We got to meet with Marilyn, one of our investigators, and learned she had a stroke not too long ago, and has lost some family members, so we were able to teach her parts of the Plan of Salvation, along with the Restoration, and she really opened up to us! She even accepted a soft baptismal invite!
After that lesson we met a lady named Chauna, who was totally drinking while we were there, and she invited us right in, sat us down, and started reading Proverbs 1 with us ha-ha. She was trying to be a missionary to us, but she was not in the right state of mind. It was quite funny, though!
On Thursday we welcomed in September! We visited with Nikita, a HQ referral who wanted a bible, and talked with her while she was doings her cousin's hair (I've seen so many weaves out here, I could probably do one myself...). She has a strong faith in Christ and as soon as we introduced her to the Book of Mormon she said she got chills and knew there had to be more records of Christ! She's been reading in Alma and LOVING it! So, she was our fourth new investigator this week. Such a sweet heart, too. She has 3 kids, and two of them are older than 8 and want to learn more, too!
Then we watched more weave being put in as we visited with the Jones family! They have been investigating the church on and off for almost a year now, and have never come to church. There's always some excuse. So, by the Spirit, we started teaching her on her level - Baltimore style. We basically told her (by the Spirit, I promise!) that we didn't believe she'd actually come to church because she always said she would and never did. We said, "You won't do it!" and she took it as a challenge ;)
So, come Sunday, we see Latear, the mom, walking in to church. She was in immense pain because of a wisdom tooth problem, but she came for the first time ever and she loved it. She said she's planning on coming every single week now. She'd been taught the doctrine and simply needed to take a step and God made that possible! MIRACLE!
Lily took us to eat again. She's the reason I have food in my belly ha-ha. We went to Red Robbin, they sang Happy Birthday to her, and yesterday she took us out to Coldstone again. She's my best friend.
We got to visit a friend of ours, Linda, in the ICU twice this week. She's a recent convert's mother, and not a member, but a good friend of ours. She is turning 70 years old on the 27th. She was admitted into the ICU because she has COPD and caught a cold, which made it so she couldn't breathe. She's not doing so well, but she still has her stubborn and hilarious attitude, so we're hoping she can fight through this.
We met with a super awesome Less-active this week who told me I'd have to do a back flip if he came to church on Sunday. He didn't, so my no-tumbling streak is still going on, but I'd totally do it if he came!
So, a little spiritual note this week: I was studying in my Book of Mormon this week (have I told y'all that that's my favorite book ever?) and I'm trying to finish it again by the end of my mission, so I've been reading a LOT! This time I'm highlighting all things that testify in Christ because it is supposed to be "Another Testament of Christ", so I thought I'd prove that point. But that's all beside the point. In my studies I was reading in 2 Nephi where Nephi's quoting Isaiah, like, the entire time, all about the signs of the second coming and there was a short verse that talked about how the sun, moon, and stars would go dark. We would be in complete darkness. I don't know about you, but when I'm alone in a room and turn off the lights, I still run to the next room with light. Complete darkness would be terrifying. But that's what's going to happen. So my mind wandered on different ways we can be a light or have light with us, despite the lack of physical light. Obvious ways are by studying the scriptures, memorizing songs, and keeping that faith in Christ who is a light to all. Then I thought about an experience I had in Young Women's when I was 12 years old. We had a combined activity where we got to go to the Timpanogos cave in Utah. I remember walking all the way to the end of the cave with all the other youth and my leaders, then we were instructed to hold on to this "iron rod" (really just a railing) and put our other hand on the shoulder of the person in front of us. They then shut off all the lights. If you know anything about caves, you might know that a cave is the only place on Earth where there's complete darkness. I was standing in complete darkens. But I wasn't afraid. I remember feeling calm. Why? I contemplated that for a second and I thought about who I was with and what I was doing. I was surrounded by people who had faith in Christ. Good people who I knew I could trust. I was also holding on to a railing. I knew exactly where I was and I knew if I didn't let go, I would be alright. In preparation for the Second Coming of the Lord, we too will need to surround ourselves with those who are strong in the faith, not forgetting to lift those who aren't up, and hold on to the Iron Rod, or the Word of God. If we want to find peace in times of trial, those simple things are what we have to do. If we go into complete darkness without them, we will fear and we will be lost. And I am forever grateful for the blessings I have been given to know the Word of God and have those people I trust. My family.
It's truly amazing how much one can get out of a single verse of scripture. Nothing magnificent, but I guess every verse of scripture is God's word. Every verse was written for a reason.
I love the Book of Mormon. :)
That was my Solid week here in the Peake! Next week will be filled with even more revelation as we have the opportunity of having a multi-zone conference on Thursday with Elder Gay of the 70, and then Sis. Hokafonu and I will be able to go to Leadership on Friday with him there as well! Exciting things are happening!
I hope you all have an amazing week filled with miracles and even more revelation. I love you all! Enjoy!

Information Overload‏ / One more thing!‏

This week was probably the fastest week of my mission. SO MUCH HAPPENED! This just might be an information overload, but I hope you enjoy and I hope I remember everything...
So, on Tuesday we had Zone Training. Sister Hokafonu and I gave an instruction on the importance of Preach My Gospel and how we can better use it in our studies. It was super fun and definitely a call to repentance for me. I've literally been given the "How to:" guide to missionary work and I need to study it more. We then went to Buffalo Wild Wings (it's basically tradition here...) with the Jones Falls sisters and started our exchange! I went to Jones Falls with Sister Hubenthal, a fellow Roy, Utah missionary! We live, like, two streets away from each other. And didn't even know each other ha-ha. But she's an awesome missionary. She couldn't wait to tell everyone we were both from Roy on our exchanges ha-ha.
On Wednesday we exchanged back with the Jones falls sisters and went on another exchange with the Alameda Hermana’s. I got to throw it back with my MTC companion Sister Hart! She came with me to the Peake! Oh, and that exchange was MUCH much needed. I think I needed it more than she did. It's interesting, because usually we don't do exchanges with the same sisters twice in a row, but both Sister Hokafonu and I felt like we needed to be together again, and Sister Hokafonu needed to be with her companion, Sister Sears. So we did and God totally directed the entire thing. That's exactly what needed to happen. On that exchange we were all able to get help that we needed from each other. Big decisions were made, and stress levels were decreased. It's the best. On that exchange we had a busy day teaching our investigators Connie, Michelle (who flat out recognized the Spirit as we were teaching and said that God was telling her she needed to get baptized again, by proper authority this time, and she needed the gift of the Holy Ghost. Holy Cow, amazing lesson), Tearra and our Recent Convert Sandra, who was super sick, but wanted us to teach a lesson anyway, and Jaunea, a new investigator who got to understand more about Prophets in our lesson!  We had a full day and Lily took us out to Panera for dinner and then to dessert at Coldstone. She's the best. She had her 26th birthday yesterday! Happy Birthday Lily!
On Thursday Sister Hokafonu and I were finally companions again. We got to have lunch at Golden Corral with the Empty Nesters in our ward. Yum. Food is the way to my heart. And we had an amazing dinner with the amazing Wood family again. They are seriously the best. An answer to prayers. It was funny, in the middle of dinner their little boy wanted to show us a toy, so his parents said yes and next thing we hear is a big box of cars coming crashing down the stairs.... we all laughed so hard lol. We just hear "Uh oh" a few times at the top of the stairs. He was too scared to come down until his parents said it was okay! ha-ha. So funny. I love kids ;)
We also got to get in with the Jones family and all of the committed to living the Word of Wisdom and it was an amazing lesson! Their two kids put on our name tags and said they wanted to be missionaries :) I'll attach a picture of that one :)
On Friday we had our last exchange of the transfer with the Ellicott City sisters. Sister Bullock, a newer missionary, got to experience Baltimore for her first time with me :) She's such a sweet heart. The first time I met her was at the Sisters Specialized Training a couple of months ago when she was brand new. We were all telling the person in front of us the first thing that came to our head about why we loved them, and it couldn't be a physical thing like, "I love your hair," it had to be deeper. I stood in front of her and the first thing she said to me was, "When I look at you I see Christ..." Oh my goodness, best compliment ever. I seriously wanted to cry. I don't know how true that was, but it just goes to show how amazing this sister is. Seriously. She's the best. We had a great exchange! We got hit on a couple of times and a lady stopped traffic in her car, honked at us, and yelled, "Whatchu doin' in the hood? Get outta da hood!" then drove away looking at us like we were crazy. It was hilarious! We even found a new investigator named Marilyn! She was in my GPS as an active member... turns out she was actually a potential investigator... that was an awkward conversation, but we taught her the restoration and it was amazing!  So many blessings in Baltimore :) We then had to exchange back that night instead of the next morning because we got permission to go to the PHILADELPHIA TEMPLE OPEN HOUSE on Saturday morning with our investigator Sis. Hackman!!!! WOOT WOOT!! Sis. Hokafonu had to drive home because I had a migraine... and she got lost, which made us late, but it was an adventure.
Saturday we woke up early to make it to the church to go to the open house with the rest of the ward on the bus! We got special permission to go because Sis. Hokafonu was in the Pennsylvania Pittsburg mission before and she was promised she could go, and President wanted to honor that promise. So off we went and it was AMAZING! The Spirit was so strong and our investigator had so many questions answered. I truly think that was exactly what she needed to make the decision to get baptized. We're hoping to hear from her soon! So GOOD! We got pictures :) There were people handing out anti-Mormon stuff on the sides, which is sad, but we just ignored them. Some members grabbed some stuff thinking it was good, but when they found out it was anti, they gave it to us to get rid of it ha-ha. So Sister Hokafonu and I did more anti-Mormon destruction lol. We have a video. It's hilarious. Hopefully I'll be able to send it.
Yesterday we had Call-outs and I found out that both Sister Hokafonu and I will be staying in Baltimore together! Sis. Hokafonu will be finishing her mission this transfer, so I get round 2 of "My Plan". We also found out that Elder Oaks will be visiting our mission on September 17th :) That'll be fun!!! We also got to feed more goats and pick up a new investigator on Sunday! Her name's Carol and she's super prepared! After the prayer, she recognized the Spirit and the light in our faces and said she wanted that for herself! SO GOOD!
So, that's the information overload for the week. Well, for the most part. This week I also had a really good conversation with my mission President about my release date. We decided that it would be better for me to be going home closer to my 18 month mark, which would be in the November transfer. I've been praying a lot about it, and, long story short, God told me that I needed to go home in November to prepare for school and a few other reasons that are unknown to me. SO, I will now be going home on Thanksgiving. If you want more details about my decision and such, please just talk to me. I'm not expecting everyone to support this decision, but I do hope that any questions will be asked directly to me. I know that this is what God wants me to do and that's all that matters. So, I'll likely be ending my mission here in Baltimore. I have 2 transfers left and I will be making them the best transfers of my mission! I'm so grateful God has a plan that is individually tailored to everyone. He knows us and He is aware of each of us. I love Him and I know He answers prayers.
Here's to the best transfer yet! Hurrah for Israel!
Shout out to my Little Sister for starting College today! Also, shout out for my niece Ali for turning 6! Happy Birthday!

PS
I forgot to mention something HUGE! So, over a year ago I started teaching a man named Chris, my very first investigator. He was going to be baptized while I was teaching him, but he still had to overcome an obstacle. A year later and he's finally baptized! Chris got baptized on August 27th and hopefully I'll be able to send you all some pictures when I get them. I didn't get to go, but I did get to hear about it :) SO COOL! Miracles are everywhere :)

Sister Humphrey
